WHAT IF THERE’S NO ADDICTION TO RECOVER FROM?
Sit with that for a moment
Not as an argument…As a possibility, can you hold it for a moment?
Most people who walk into our services believe something about themselves
I’m broken
I’m not enough
Something is wrong with me
And we take that belief seriously. We should. It’s running their life
But look at what a belief actually is
It’s a thought
One that has been thought so many times, for so long, that it no longer feels like a thought
It feels like the truth
It feels like who they are
A child concludes “I’m too much” or “I’m on my own”
It made sense at the time. It may even have kept them safe
Then that conclusion gets repeated for twenty, thirty, forty years
And somewhere along the way it stops being a conclusion and becomes an identity
The drinking makes sense inside that identity
The using makes sense
The hiding, the people pleasing, the shame. All of it makes sense
Which raises an uncomfortable question for those of us who do this work
How much of what we treat is the person, and how much is the story they’ve been living inside?
Because if it’s the story, we can spend years managing the symptoms of something that was never true
We build relapse prevention plans around a self that doesn’t exist
We help people cope with being broken, when they were never broken in the first place
This isn’t a criticism, it’s an invitation
What happens when someone sees, even for a moment, that “I’m not enough” is just a thought they learned?
Not a fact. Not a diagnosis. A thought…
Often, something quietens
Not because we fixed them
Because they recognised what was already there underneath
Peace was never missing
It was covered
And our real job isn’t to repair people
it’s to help them notice who they were before they believed otherwise
Who would they be without that thought?
Who would you be??
