WHEN DID SOMEONE LAST LISTEN WITHOUT TRYING TO FIX YOU?
I’ve spent decades working with addiction and human suffering
I’ve studied the theories, learned the models, attended the training and listened to some incredibly sophisticated explanations of why people struggle
And sometimes I wonder how much of it we actually need to understand another human being
Because when I look back at my own life, some of the most profound moments had nothing to do with anyone understanding my psychology
Someone was kind to me
Someone listened without trying to change me
Someone made me laugh when life felt unbearable
Someone welcomed me when I didn’t feel I belonged anywhere
And sometimes someone simply sat with me, without needing to make anything happen
There’s something extraordinary about ordinary human connection
We can spend years trying to understand why someone needs to escape their life
And perhaps we could also spend a little more time wondering what might make their life feel worth being present for
A friendship. A sense of belonging. Being able to be yourself around another person
I’m not suggesting that human suffering is simple or that everyone can find freedom through connection alone
But as Einstein Said, if you cannot explain it simply, you do not understand it well enough!
So I’m wondering whether we’ve become so busy explaining suffering that we’ve forgotten some of the most basic things about being alive
Because I don’t remember anyone ever changing my life by explaining my nervous system to me
I remember the people who made me feel welcome in the world
And I wonder how much healing begins right there
